Submitting to Search Engines
You need to describe your site with a few phrases you hope to be found for. Use a keyword research tool to find these words. You could use one of the following:
http://www.google.com/trends
http://www.live.com/?searchonly=true&=en-US
http://buzz.yahoo.com/
Your description should rather contain your keywords then a marketing message otherwise you won't be found for your keywords. If you can do both that is ideal.
Submission to Open Directory Project
Submission is free. Fill out the URL and the form in the category you are submitting to and hope you'll be listed. Do not expect any feedback from the editors. If you don't get listed in a few weeks then try again.
Submitting to Google
The natural way is to get an other site link to you. (this will be important later for your site to rank well anyway) If your submission to directories was successful then crawler based search engines might have already picked your link up then you don't need to resubmit it again. However in case you need to you can do that on http://www.google.com/addurl.html.
Tips for a better ranking:
- Imagine what would you type into Google if you were looking for your products or service. These are your target keywords.
- Each page of your website need to have different target keywords that reflect the content of the page.
- Your target keywords should be at least two or more words long to get quality visitors. Single words will bring you traffic that is less likely will find your site relevant to the term.
- Locate your target keywords on the top part of the page. Most important is your title followed by your headlines and the first paragraph of the page. Consider your table structure and javascripts as elements that could have a negative effect on this if not used properly.
- Relevant copy. The content should reflect the topic determined by your keywords.
- Make your links HTML instead of flash or javascript. Do not use frames unless you DON'T want the content indexed.
- Get value inbound links. Search Engine algorithms do link analysis because this is the hardest for spammers to fake.
- Good inbound links will surely give your site a boost.
- NO SPAMMING
- Submit the most important pages individually.
- Search Engines are not the only sources to visitors.
